The perfect synergy between sail and mast is fundamental to achieve the maximum performance. Using a mast with the wrong curve and stiffness for a given sail makes all the designer’s work useless. The profile will not be right, the sail will not twist properly and will not perform as designed. For this reason we developed a YES mast range
All our masts are manufactured in Italy, where some of the best carbon prepreg masts are made. This allows us to work together very closely in the research and development, to design new models and perfectly tune curves and stiffness amounts. Carbon percentage, length and stiffness play a very important role in a range of masts.
We have chosen the Constant Curve bend as the best. In all our tests this curve gave us the best results with high performance and comfort at the same time. The constant curve (which does not mean that the mast flexes in the middle), shows the most progressive and gradual flex pattern. This is a standard curve and makes our masts Compatible with every Sail. The YES masts have a reduced diameter in the upper sections (the base has a standard diameter) making them more aerodinamic and flexible. In all masts we use the full or partial ALU-TEX Protection. This particular silver blue outside layer reflects the damaging sun radiation and gives an impact protection to our higher carbon content masts. A small increase in weight but a huge gain in mast life.
The construction with pre-impregnated carbon is done winding the material around individual molds for each model, independently for base and top. We can control bending and stiffness with both diameter and carbon content. We can put the materials differently in top and base based on the different demands. The ferrule is integrated in the base, this makes the mast lighter and the center of effort lower, it also avoids bending.
The masts are cooked in autoclave at 120 degrees celsius at a pressure of 6 Bars for 3 1/2 hours. This treatment eliminates any imperfection and eventual air bubbles.
Quality control is a primary concern. To this end we test stiffness and bending curve in an automatic measuring machine and we also do a crash test at 140 kg. Considering that the breaking point is around 175 kg, you can easily imagine that any irregularity will be noticed.
